[edit] Engineering in India
According to the AICTE, approximately 440,000 students were enrolled in engineering degree programs in 2004-05, 265,000 at the diploma level and 33,000 at the master’s level. The seven IITs had a total of 25,000 students enrolled at all levels in 2002-03 (Rao report). Figures capturing the annual number of graduating engineers are a little harder to come by; however, a 2005 study by Washington, D.C.-based National Academies estimates that 200,000 students graduate each year from engineering programs across the country (originally estimated at 350,000).
U.S. institutions graduate 70,000 engineers annually, European Union 100,000, China 640,000, of which 350,000 bachelor programs and 290,000 short-cycle programs.
[edit] Engineering Colleges in India
There are a very large number of Colleges in India. The infrastructure, faculty and the placement records are some of the things that you need to check before enrolling in any of the engineering colleges. The first college to be established in 1847, was the Thomason College of Civil Engineering, Roorkee, which is now known as the IIT Roorkee (Roorkee University.)
